List of Silicone Scar Products (Sheets and Gels)

Since silicone sheeting, and later on, silicone based scar reduction ointments have been introduced to the consumer market a myriad of different products has become available.

Some only contain silicones while others have additional ingredients. Whether or not these additives provide added value or maybe even a synergistic effect remains to be seen. For the sake of completeness, here a list of silicone sheets and gels available.

  1. Thanks for the list. I have hypertrophic scars in my jaw line for years now and haven’t applied anything. They’ve lasted for about 6 years now. Which of the scar treatment that work well for me considering the number of years I’ve had my scars? Thank you very much for your kind response. Regards.

  2. Hello i want to know if silicone gels work to heal acne scars too, like box scars. If so pls which in of the silicone gel in the list will do something good for my box scars. Thank you.

    1. You can order them from Amazon without a prescription. Just click the red brand names in the table above. Or you could get them at your local pharmacy or drug store.

  3. Just had surgery for keloid on my chest about 3 weeks ago what is the best silicone gel to use the dr said it must be silicone.

    1. I’d go for Mepitac Silicone Scar Tape. This because medical literature suggest that scar tension is a cause of keloids forming. Mepitac reduces tension and offers the benefits of silicone, which is why that would be my first choice.

  4. Just had a basal cell removed from my forehead (MOHs surgery) and the dermatologist recommend silicone sheets. Can you tell me when is the best time to start (stitches come out in five more days). Also, should I do sheets during the night and gel during the day, or is that too much time? Last thing, once the scar has diminished and I stop using the silicone, how long will the results last, or do I have to continue using the silicone from time to time over the years?

    1. The best time is generally as soon as the wound has closed / fully healed. Check the package instructions for your specific brand. Regarding night and day, I would recommend to see what works best for you. How does your skin react, how does it feel, etc. Most people will not experience any side effects but everybody is different so monitor and adjust if necessary (for instance, wear them a few hours less). Once my scars diminished I never used the silicone again. The results were permanent.

    1. That may depend on the type of scar, its appearance, its location, and some other factors. Please see the other posts on this website and the comments, there’s lots of user experiences and tips for which type to use in specific situations.

  5. Please suggest a silicone gel from lacerations I got under my
Eye , between my eyes on nose and forhead. I am getting thick scars on nose and under eye. Forhead is nice and flat.

    1. It depends on whether you want to use a silicone cream (that dries up to a thin film) or thicker and harder to keep attached to the face sheets. If you’d opt for sheets I would personally choose either Cica Care because of their stickiness or Mepitac Silicone Tape for its tension reduction abilities (this because of facial expressions and muscle movements) but that’s just me theorizing. There’s no hard science that determines which is best for which situation. At the end of the day it’s just which choice feels best to you. Hope this helps.

  6. Hi,

I met with an accident in the year 2011 and i had around 30 – 35 stitches in my forehead. Now i have scars in my forehead whether i can use silicon gel? and what type of silicon gel i should use.

  7. What would you recommend for a new cut – 1/2″ long on the bridge of nose between the eyes – for a 3-year old? The cut is currently sealed with glue, but the seam looks pretty ragged and I’m afraid it will scar pretty badly.

    1. Not sure if a silicone gel sheet will stay on, especially in such a young child so I think I’d opt for a silicone gel such as KeloCote or ScarAway.

  8. I just had abdominal-plasty September 17 and have been using Mederma since the wounds have fully healed, about one month now twice a day. I was wondering what type of silicone product is recommended for a scar of this size? I know it will not totally disappear but would like to see if I can get the redness smoother. It is not raised or indented.

  9. My four years old girl had a stitch on her forehead due to a cut two years ago, which type of silicon gel would flatten and reduce the scar, I also had a Caesarian section two years ago which type would you recommend for me too

    1. Generally, most types will work, please see my other posts here on this website to learn more about which brand I recommend in which situations.

  10. I’ve had a bump to my fore head I had 14 stitches due to come out next week please could u help me decide what’s best for me to use and when I think the gel sounds best for me but not sure thanks

    1. Gel is less intrusive, it hardly shows when you’re wearing it. Sheets do so this may prevent you from wearing them during the day. Personally I tend to prefer sheets.

  11. Last October a dog attacked my face. I’ve had plastic surgery once. The sheets have worked really well on my face but I have a very thick scar still on my lip. Which product would work best for that?

    1. I don’t know. I’d think keeping sheets stick on lips will be virtually impossible so I’d probably go for gel. Do note that I have no experience with silicone scar treatment on lips nor have I read about it. Wish you the best of luck and would be really great if you could share your experiences to help others out.

  12. My daughter picks every scratch, bump, and bug bite she’s ever gotten. She has dark scars all over her body. What product would you suggest to help diminish the dark marks she has.

  13. I’ve only been using The Dr Max Powers Scar Serum for a few days (twice a day) but I’ve already noticed a visible reduction in the scar, which I never dreamed would be possible. It’s difficult to take a photo that captures the extent of the difference but, the edges of the scar have receded, especially at the top. The scar used to be a long oval shape but is now rounder. What remains of the scar is essentially a hard lump of collagen, so I certainly don’t expect it to disappear any time soon but this product is by far the most promising that I’ve come across in ten years.

  14. Hi I’m a 25 year old female african based in SA, I have a one year old scar from the left side of my neck to the centre of my chest suffered from a gun shot wound. They used staples to stitch the scar so its about one or two cm wide and has gone darker than my original skin colour. Any suggestions please? As this has really affected my self-esteem

  16. I have scar on my face since I was 2 years old. I am 28 now. The scar is due to cut with blade on the face. Which of the cream or gel can you recommend me to reduce the appearance or remove it.

    1. Depends on how your scar looks. If it’s raised and or discolored I’d try silicones. If it’s indented then perhaps a dermaroller could be helpful but you’ll have to be really careful. Do a search on this site for dermarollers for scar.

  17. I ave swollen dark scar on my leg over a year now nd ave tried different scar removal creams nd ointment and am not pleased with the result pls what can I use

  18. Hi,
I had a fall onto oysters about 3 months ago and had to get 14 stitches.. I have a 6″ scar running across my hip and I was wondering what would be the best thing to use to help remove/reduce the sight of the scar? It is slightly raised and pink.
    Thanks so much

    1. Silicone sheets. See the post titled best scar products here on this site to see which brands I recommend in which situations. Best of luck with fading your scar.

  24. HI this is really helpful . I have scar in my armpit from shingles. wanting to know what silicon gel I should use. adivce please 🙂

  25. My 2 year old had 6 stitches on her forehead 5 weeks ago. The er doc said mederma but I’ve been reading mixed reviews on it. We started the mederma 2 weeks after the incident. She’s very pale and it’s very red. I’d like to minimize the scar as much as possible since it’s on the middle of her forehead. It upsets me every time I look at it as I feel it’s my fault. What would you suggest?

  26. I have so many scars on my legs. What gel or cream should I use? My scar looks dark and circle and it’s all over my legs.

  28. Hii i have burn scars on my legs due to petrol after treatments only healing is there so please tell me about which cream is better for reduces healing

  29. I fell, landed on my face, broke my nose and got a concussion. I had scars on the bridge of my nose and big ones onmy upper lip. I tried both Mepitac silicone tape and a Cica gel sheet. The Mepitac tape was utterly worthless, it was barely adhesive and provided NO tension at all. It cost me $22 Cdn, what a waste. I then moved on to a Cica Bandage, which has given
me amazing results in just a few weeks!! It’s been 3 weeks, I only wear it while I sleep and my scars are far less noticeable. Cica sticks well, but will roll off as I sleep with my face buried in the pillow, so I bought a $2 roll of fabric tape at Walmart. Cica gets very sticky when i wash it with hand soap & warm water, so u can reuse over & over. Cica’s initial cost seems high, but I’m using the same two pieces all this time & they aren’t worn at all. I think if I had gone the Scar Away route, it would’ve ended up way more expensive. Thanks for all the info on this website, it helped me know what to buy. Oh! And remember to put sunscreen on your scars until FULLY faded because sun exposure increases redness a lot – I learned the hard way!

  30. Sorry, one more thing – my stitches were in too long, they never dissolved properly, so I had very uneven skin on my scarred upper lip. The Cica gel sheet pieces have actually had the effect of evening out my skin!! I didn’t know that was possible! I’m so grateful. My sister is going to use it on her open-heart surgery scars, will keep u posted.

  31. i have a scar on my knee and it’s been 9 years.
please can silicon gel help me eradicate it and if so, which product should i use

  32. Hi there. I had a fall onto my face and ive been left with a gravel rash scar between my nose and forehead. Ive been told to use a silicon based cream what would you recommend to reduce the scarring?
